Neeli Cherkovski continues his poetic exploration started with his PEN Award winning Leaning Against Time, followed by From the Canyon Outward and now with his The Crow and I. Cherkovski, again opens the window to the self as he takes us deeper into his search of time, reason, redemption and love. In this, the third in his series of poetic memoirs, Cherkovski reflects on his sexuality, the lives he has touched and been touched by, and his love of his adopted city, San Francisco. Cherkovski, now a reluctant elder, has found his place in the garden. A place where friends of every sort are welcome to sit, rest their wings, sip a cappuccino and share a life time of wonder with the poet forever in full flight.
The Crow and I Neeli Cherkovski Books
This is probably Neeli's best work. His experience as a sage comes shining through and there are some really memorable poems in here. I have read many more than once. Lyrical, thoughtful, insightful, and ever-poetic. Brings the San Francisco Bay to life.If you're reading the reviews for this, then something about Neeli has already piqued your interest, and I highly recommend that you get it! Poetry deserves wider readership, and Neeli is one of San Francisco's best. His voice conveys an authenticity bridging the counter-culture that evolved out of the 60s with the confused currents of the present day. This is a great book to get warm with on a couch on an otherwise cool day.

The Crow and I Neeli Cherkovski Books Reviews
A look back on his life by a sensitive, knowledgeable poet. Life events in poetic form by a master of the art of expression. Very frank and artful self-portrait. Recommended highly.
A welcome addition to R.L. Crow’s Cherkovski series. Six years after From the Canyon Outward, with the poet “reluctantly” pushing 70 now, there’s the inevitable sense of aging, questioning and nostalgia, but with an underlying deep maturation. And an accepting, irrepressible imagery
“... no longer will we be
carnivorous, no, we’ll pick stars
like picking cotton
put them in the long pick sacks
hung on our shoulders
carry them to the weighing.”
These poems flow like subterranean streams, flare like comet tails and soar like corvids through landscapes of the mind and the planet we live on. Memory, the passage of time, an uncertain personal and collective future surface in fluid associative leaps making a complex music with surreal notes. The poems alight in many places San Francisco, Los Angeles, Italy, the Louvre, Greece, the Alps, Mt. Fujiyama, the café, the kitchen, the bedroom, the plaza. Cherkovski is a master of the lyrical poem, ones that hit hard on the crises of our age, and poems that discover beauty and wisdom in life’s transitory moments. The last poem in the collection, “A Box of Candles” leaves the reader with this haunting thought “time has come for action/a plan is devised to rearrange/our circuitry, no longer will we/be carnivorous, no, we will pick stars/like picking cotton/put them into the long pick sacks/hung on our shoulders/carry them to the weighing”
Highly recommended for readers who love real poetry.
